Introduction

A walk in the woods above Littebeck, passing through woods, past the strange rock cave of the Hermitage to reach the waterfall at Falling foss, and then back through the other side of the valley

Conditions

Can be muddy in the woods, and route finding is difficult between the waterfall and where you pickup the path again

Detailed description

Follow the obvious path up into the woods. Pass the small cave left over from alumn mining, and carry on along through the woods.

After going along through the woods, you start to climb up from the valley, and you'll reach a cave carved from the rock called the Hermitage, that has been there for a few hundred years. Carry on along the path, unitil you see a waterfall on the right. You'll see a abandoned house above the waterfall. Carry on until you reach a tarmac path, and turn right to cross the bridge.

Carry on up the track, until you see a path leading off into the woods (an alternative is to carry on along the track until you reach Leas Head farm). Follow this path into the woods and down towards a beck. It become quite hard to follow the path as you go further. After crossing the beck, turn uphill and pick up the path, turn right on the path and head up out of the woods, until you reach Leas Head Farm. At the farm head north along the path through the fields, and then into the woods, and then back down towards Littlebeck and the end of the walk.

Narrative

A snowy day offered a chance of a walk in the snow. We walked up into the woods, and enjoyed the snowy views of the woods and the moors.
