Introduction
A walk around the south and west Gower coastline. Best completed in a day as the sunset over Worm's Head from Burry Holmes is out of this world.
Conditions
Everything from rough Limestone to gorgeous soft sand. Generally dry under foot so lightweight footwear is best.
Hazards and warnings
Sunburn on your left hand side - the sun follows you around Gower!
Watch out for the tides - Gower has a hypertidal range, hitting 12m or more during springs. If following the beach from Three Cliffs to Oxwich, check out tide tables first or head inland if you are unsure.
Detailed description
I've done this walk more times than I can remember. It's one of the best kept secrets in the UK.
The beaches at Oxwich, Port Eynon and and Caswell fill up in the summer but the rest are left to locals largely.
The cliff paths will be empty largely.
The beaches are near perfect with vertical Limestone cliffs dropping onto clean sand and dunes.
Paths are all well waymarked and routefinding is a doddle - just keep the sea on your left and take care on the cliff paths.
Rounding Burry Holmes in the evening is my favourite bit. The view to Worm's Head is out of this world. Fall Bay and Mewslade take some beating as does the grassy walk from Oxwich point to Port Eynon. Then again, theres Pwll Du bay nestled away and Three Cliffs Bay.
If you time the tides right it is possible to walk from Three Cliffs to Oxwich on the beach, taking in Tor Bay and Nicholaston.
There are endless variations to this route. It is possible to start and finish in Reynoldston, taking in Cefyn Bryn and Whitford point but you will miss out on the cliffs between Mumbles and Three Cliffs bay.
I've set it to level 4 hardness but only on account of the length - 45 km in a day. If this is too much, try doing sections over several walks. The obvious ones are Mumbles to Oxwich, Oxwich to Port Eynon, Port Eynon to Rhossili and Rhossili to Llanmadoc.
