Introduction

A short but hard walk around a reservoir. For the first part there's a decent track, but the last half is along an increasingly difficult to follow boggy track over rough ground.

Conditions

Boggy and nearly pathless in the last part. A good path on the first part of the route.

Detailed description

Climb to the top or the dam, and follow the track around the dam until you reach the road. Then turn along the roa at the head of the smaller damn, and go down the track.

The land is access land (with limited access) so check http://www.countrysideaccess.gov.uk/static_pages/further_information/access_land_maps for full details about what restrictions may be in force. Turn up the hill and away from the path across the old quarry to avoid passing through the small farm.

After the farm drop down to join the track again, before following it down and across a small stream. Follow the path high above the lake, before you reach the wood. When you reach the wood, the path becomes very hard to follow with rough tussocky ground, before you cross a stream, when you can move along the edge of the lake, until you get near the sailing club. Go around the club before dropping down onto the dam, and return to the start.

Narrative

A week had passed since the last snow had fallen. The snow that was left was part melted and quite hard. On the tracks this was fine, but on the rough trackless part of the walk, progress was slow.
