Lava field

The route crosses a massive lava field, which is old enough to be covered with moss. This is probably only a few thousand years old.

Keilir

The route crosses several small ridges in the lava and the mountain pokes its head round the corner enticingly.

Evening sun

This picture was taken at 21:59 in the first week of June. At this time of year the sun does not set in Iceland; the sky just slowly tinges blue...

Keilir path

The path is quite wide in places, and in others quite thready. It's a band of worn moss, too young to even make mud. It stands out as a black stripe against the green background.

Lava sand

The landscape is, in places, very flat and uniform. Here we see a classic example of lava sand. Much of the interior of Iceland is like this.

View from the shoulder

Keilir is ringed by a few small conical hills and here we see the view from the shoulder of the mountain across them. The wind at this point was about forty knots.

Keilir Summit

The summit view. To the right is Hemmi sitting on the trig point and sheltering from the screaming wind, to the left is the box containing the visitors' book.
